PRESIDENT OBAMA REFUSES TO “OK” KEYSTONE XL PIPELINE – JOHN BOEHNER “REACTS” – 1-18-12

House Speaker John Boehner is not a Happy Camper (albeit a very well-rested & tanned one) over the news that President Obama has refused to approve the Keystone XL Pipeline (from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico).

Like they say in real life John: “Tough Nuggies!”

The President’s reasoning: not enough time to do an adequate review and analysis of the impact of such a large project. The GOP, in exchange for signing off on the middle-class payroll tax cut extension and the unemployment benefits extension during the Christmas holidays, had garnered a 60-day deadline for the Obama Administration to make a decision on the pipeline project.
.
Well, the decision was made!
.
Personally, I think a large chunk of Obama’s rationale is that this is an election year and why give anything to the Republicans when they’ve bent over backwards to thwart his administration at every turn.
.
In any event, this is the second “smack-down” of House Speaker John Boehner. The first, of course, was Boehner’s insistence on holding back on granting any extensions for both the middle-class tax cuts and unemployment benefits during the December legislative slog in Congress. He eventually caved-in on that hardline stance and both extensions passed in Congress and were subsequently signed into law by the President just before Christmas.

Hey, John, don’t look back over your shoulder ’cause they may be gaining on you (your reign as House Speaker is not looking too promising at this point in time).

“ON WISCONSIN!” – RECALL DRIVE AMASSES OVER A MILLION SIGNATURES! CAN WE SAY WISCONSIN REPUBLICAN GOV. SCOTT WALKER IS “TOAST”?

“Soon-To-Be” Ex-Governor Scott Walker (R)/Wisconsin!

In addition, the recall drive also netted 845,000 signatures for the removal of Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch.
.
Only 540,208 signatures were needed to put the recall of Gov. Scott Walker on the November ballot. Obviously, Wisconsin voters far-surpassed this threshold and in just two months (Nov. 15, 2011 – Jan. 15, 2012). WOW!

SHORT VIDEO – PRESIDENT OBAMA’S “POPULIST” SPEECH AT OSAWATOMIE-KANSAS EARLIER THIS WEEK
Better late than never. President Obama’s speech in Osawatomie, Kansas earlier this week finally brought forth some truly populist rhetoric from this staid and “centrist” president.

Teddy Roosevelt delivered a rousing populist speech here in 1910 calling for – among other things – a “living-wage”, an 8-hour day, equal pay for women and child labor laws. Imagine that!
.
Teddy Roosevelt’s speech was a call for a strong central government that would protect ordinary Americans from what he called the greed and recklessness of big business and special interests. That speech became known as Roosevelt’s “New Nationalism” speech and became one of the main components of 20th-century progressivism.
.
It remains to be seen whether President Obama’s speech lives up to that high standard or is simply too little, too late. He has close to a year before the next presidential election to at least get his “rhetoric” in order, if not his decision-making.

OCCUPY TO GET ITS OWN BUILDING IN L.A. – IS THIS THE “WAY FORWARD” FOR THE MOVEMENT?
Los Angeles is offering a public building for the Occupy movement according to an official of L.A. Occupy. The City of Los Angeles will charge Occupy-L.A. $1.00 a year lease for the use of the public building located near City Hall.

Although not the original intent of the Occupy Movement, perhaps this represents the “way forward” for the Movement as a whole. In light of the rash of recent Occupy encampment raids in recent days across the nation by local police authorities this “next phase” might be the logical progression of the Occupy Movement.
.
The Occupy movement needs to seriously envision the occupation of a public building in every city within which to establish a permanent “presence” to enact meaningful and long-lasting systemic change to our overall society.
